Nestled on the banks of the Whitefish River, Bearing North Lodge is a sanctuary where history meets nature. Last March, we had an extraordinary guest that added a dash of wild charm to our serene retreat—a young bobcat! This elusive feline graced us with its presence for two consecutive days, offering a rare glimpse into the natural world that thrives around the lodge.

Day One: A Surprise Visit

Our first sighting of the bobcat was a thrilling surprise. As it prowled through the brush, its eyes locked onto a pair of turkeys near the lodge. With a burst of speed and grace, it gave chase, but the turkeys managed to escape, leaving our visitor to continue its hunt unseen. The anticipation and excitement among our guests and staff were palpable—we hoped for another visit from our wild neighbor.

Day Two: A Lunchtime Spectacle

Our hopes were rewarded the very next day. This time, we were ready with cameras as the bobcat returned, stealthily creeping up to the lodge. What happened next was a scene straight out of a nature documentary. With a sudden pounce, the bobcat caught a mouse and settled on our deck to enjoy its lunch. We captured this incredible moment on video, which you can watch below!

As we watched from a respectful distance, the bobcat seemed unfazed by our presence, savoring its meal with the majestic backdrop of the Whitefish River behind it. After finishing its snack, it sat on the deck for a short while, taking in the tranquil view before wandering off into the woods.

An Extended Stay

The bobcat didn't just disappear after its visits to the lodge. It made a temporary home in a brush pile behind our barn, where it stayed for several weeks. Although sightings were rare, the knowledge that such a magnificent creature was living nearby added a magical touch to our daily routines. Spotting it now and then was a delightful reminder of the untamed beauty that surrounds Bearing North Lodge.
