If you're staying at Bearing North Lodge and looking for a peaceful, easy-to-reach spot to enjoy nature, Whitefish Falls is the perfect destination! Located just 5 miles from the lodge, this lesser-known waterfall on the West Branch of the Whitefish River offers the perfect quick escape into the heart of the Upper Peninsula.
A Short and Sweet Hike
Whitefish Falls is easy to access right from the parking area, making it a great choice for families or anyone looking to stretch their legs. The trailhead is marked by large rocks and leads you on a gentle walk to the falls. You’ll follow a scenic route through forested paths before arriving at what is more of a series of large rapids than a dramatic waterfall.
But don’t let the modest height fool you—this spot is ideal for a summer visit. Unlike some of the towering waterfalls nearby, Whitefish Falls invites you to take off your shoes, wade into the cool water, and explore the rocks along the river. It’s a quiet place to relax, dip your feet, and enjoy the surrounding beauty without the crowds.
A Rustic Escape
For those who want to extend their time in this peaceful setting, there’s a rustic campground near the falls. It’s a wonderful place to set up a tent and experience the serene atmosphere, with fewer crowds than the more popular campgrounds in the region. Whether you’re stopping by for an afternoon picnic or staying overnight, Whitefish Falls is a perfect getaway.
Directions from Bearing North Lodge
Finding Whitefish Falls is easy! Here are the directions from the lodge:
Turn left in Trenary onto M-67 S (0.6 mi)
Turn right onto US-41 N (3.6 mi)
Turn left onto State Forest Campground Rd, where you’ll find parking and access to the trailhead.
Don't be Confused
While Whitefish Falls is a lovely spot to explore, don’t confuse it with the nearby Laughing Whitefish Falls, which boasts a 100-foot drop and is much more dramatic. (We’ll cover that one in a future blog post!) Whitefish Falls is all about a laid-back experience—perfect for a quick stop to frog around, enjoy nature, and relax in the cool waters.
Stay tuned for more about the beautiful waterfalls of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula! But for now, Whitefish Falls awaits—just a stone’s throw from Bearing North Lodge.
