At Bearing North Lodge, history runs deep. Originally built in 1969 by Floyd and Ida Kallio, this lodge was more than just a home; it was the heart of the Kallio family, where they raised their five children and created countless memories. But like many cherished old homes, time took its toll. By the time Ida passed away in early 2019, the house had not seen significant updates in many years and was beginning to show its age.

In 2020, the transformation began—what was once the Kallio family home started its journey to becoming the Bearing North Lodge, a retreat where guests could experience both the charm of the past and the comforts of modern living. This was no simple facelift; it was a top-to-bottom, inside-and-out renovation that reimagined every inch of the property.

Breathing New Life into an Old Home

The first step in the renovation process was to address the interior, where every room was revitalized. The lodge's floors were completely replaced, giving the space a fresh, clean foundation. The kitchen, once a dated hub of family life, was entirely remodeled, equipped with modern appliances while still maintaining a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The creation of the new dining room brought a sense of communal warmth, perfect for sharing meals and stories after a day of exploring the Upper Peninsula.

Both bathrooms underwent complete overhauls, now featuring custom touches that blend comfort and luxury. The fireplace—a focal point of the home—was carefully cleaned and sealed, ready to provide warmth and ambiance for future gatherings. The giant beams that bring so much character to the lodge, were refinished. These beams were salvaged FROM from the original, old railroad bridge that used to stand where the current bridge is located. Every piece of furniture, every decoration, was chosen with care, reflecting the up-north charm that defines Bearing North Lodge.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the renovation was the use of repurposed materials. The wood trim, tin ceiling, and other materials were salvaged from old buildings on the property that had outlived their usefulness. These elements, full of history, were given new life in the lodge, adding character and a tangible connection to the past. Many of the decorations you see, from Floyd’s snowshoes above the fireplace, to the old railroad crossing sign, are part of the lodge’s history.

The Great Outdoors, Renewed

The exterior of the lodge saw just as much care and attention. The lodge's facade was repainted and touched up, and the decks and balcony were rebuilt, offering stunning views of the surrounding nature. The yard, once overgrown, was cleaned up, expanded, and reseeded, creating a lush, inviting space for relaxation and play. Along the river, brush and undergrowth were cleared, making the waterfront more accessible and enjoyable.

Even the driveway received a makeover, resealed for durability and aesthetic appeal. The property’s apple trees, a nod to the land’s heritage, were pruned to ensure they continue to bear fruit for years to come. The historic railroad bridge, another key feature of the property, was cleaned up, with brush removed to highlight its rugged beauty.

The hiking trails that wind through the property were opened up and improved, inviting guests to explore the natural beauty of the area. Whether it’s a quiet walk along the river or a more adventurous trek to the weir, these trails offer something for everyone.

Looking Ahead: Exciting Plans for the Future

But the story doesn’t end here. There’s more to come at Bearing North Lodge! The indoor sauna and exercise room are nearing completion, set to open by late 2024 or early 2025, providing a perfect spot to unwind after a day of outdoor activities. Upstairs, a large room is being transformed into "The Alcoves," a cozy sleeping area that will accommodate up to eight additional guests.

The garage is being converted into a Rec Room, where future guests can enjoy pool, ping pong, and even disco lighting for those impromptu dance parties. And if you enjoy cooking outdoors, you’ll love the planned outdoor kitchen, which will sit just outside the kitchen windows. A new deck and seating area outside the sauna room are also in the works.

Plans also include additional landscaping around the lodge and along the river, a camping shelter, and picnic grounds near the weir. Plus, an improved pedestrian crossing on the railroad bridge is in the works, along with a new pavilion near the river—a perfect spot for gatherings and special events.

These renovations and plans are a labor of love by the owners, who have poured their hearts into making Bearing North Lodge a special place that honors its past while embracing the future. Each improvement is made with the hope that guests will find joy, relaxation, and a deep connection to the beauty and history of the Upper Peninsula.
