It’s a crisp, sunny morning at Bearing North Lodge. The Whitefish River hums a gentle tune outside your window, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts through the air. As you sip your coffee on the deck, someone mentions Laughing Whitefish Falls State Park—a must-see spot just 20 miles from the lodge. The decision is unanimous: today is the day for a waterfall adventure.

The Journey to the Falls
Armed with a packed lunch and plenty of enthusiasm, you set off. The drive takes you along M-94, with its winding roads and towering pines, showcasing the Upper Peninsula’s natural beauty. As you approach Sundell Road, the anticipation builds. You follow the signs, turning onto a quiet dirt road that leads you to the park’s parking area.
Here’s a map to guide you:[Insert map with clear directions from Bearing North Lodge to the park.
Into the Woods
The parking lot feels like a world away from the everyday hustle. The air is fresh and cool, filled with the scent of pine and earth. A clearly marked trail beckons, winding its way through a serene beech-maple forest. It’s only half a mile to the falls, but the journey is part of the magic. You hear the sound of rushing water before you see it—a hint of the marvel that awaits.
The trail ends at the first of three observation platforms. From here, you catch your first glimpse of Laughing Whitefish Falls, cascading like a silver ribbon through the lush gorge.

Exploring the Falls
The upper platform is perfect for soaking in the panoramic view, especially if you prefer to avoid stairs. For those craving a closer look, the middle platform (just 20 steps down) offers a great vantage point. Feeling adventurous? Descend the full 137 steps to the lower platform for a front-row seat to one of Michigan’s most impressive waterfalls.

As you stand there, the water tumbles over the rocks, sending up a mist that catches the sunlight. Towering white pines and hemlocks frame the scene, their presence a reminder of the area’s wild, untamed beauty. It’s peaceful, humbling, and deeply memorable.

Pro Tips for Your Visit
You’ve probably worked up an appetite by now, so you head back to the parking area, where there’s a charcoal grill for a quick snack. A hand pump provides fresh water, but you’re glad you packed extra bottles just in case.
Pets are welcome at the park, too, so your four-legged friends can join the adventure—as long as they stay leashed. And don’t forget, a Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry. Be sure to grab yours ahead of time.
During the winter, the park is only accessible via snowshoe or ungroomed cross-country ski trails. The road leading into the park is seasonal and unplowed with no turn-around. The dirt road leading to the park may be very muddy at times.
More Than Just a Day Trip
If you’re feeling up for more exploration, the North Country Trail crosses through the northern end of the park. Its 1.9-mile spur trail connects to the falls, offering even more opportunities to lose yourself in the beauty of the Upper Peninsula.

Or perhaps this is just the start of your waterfall tour. Wagner Falls Scenic Site, another breathtaking destination we will cover separately, is a short drive east near Munising. It’s like chasing treasures, with each turn revealing another gem.
Home Sweet Lodge
As the sun begins to dip low in the sky, you find your way back to Bearing North Lodge. The glow of the day’s adventure lingers as you gather around the outdoor grill by the river. Tales of the falls flow as freely as the Whitefish River itself.
It’s the perfect ending to a perfect day—one of many in your Northwoods getaway.
